Sim Ann

10am // Opening Speech: Hwa Chong's 50 years of contributions to Singapore

Ms Sim Ann, an alumna of Hwa Chong Junior College, is a well-known face in Singapore's political scene. She received a President's Scholarship to study at Oxford University and held positions in MOH, MHA, MTI and IE Singapore before leaving the Civil Service to successfully contest in the General Election of 2011. Since her election as an MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, she has rapidly risen to become Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communications and Information. She has three children.

Ms Sim will speak about how Hwa Chong has contributed to Singapore in the past 50 years, and also plant a tree on the school grounds.

Tan Su Shan

11am // Panel 1: The impact of Hwa Chong on our personal and professional success

Ms Tan Su Shan, an alumna of Hwa Chong Junior College, joined DBS in June 2010. She is currently Group Head, Consumer Banking & Wealth Management. She also serves as the President Commissioner for PT Bank DBS Indonesia. Prior to joining DBS, Su Shan was Morgan Stanley’s Head of Private Wealth Management for Southeast Asia. Before re-joining Morgan Stanley in May 2008, she was a Region Head for Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei for Citi Private Bank. She was responsible for the private bank’s overall business and a board director of Citi Trust Singapore. Su Shan was also the Singapore Investment Centre Head.

Prior to that, she was an Executive Director with Morgan Stanley in Singapore, serving from 1997 to 2005 as an investment adviser to high net worth families, corporates and institutions in the region. Before joining Morgan Stanley, Su Shan spent eight years in ING Baring Securities in institutional equity sales, working in key financial hubs in London, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Su Shan was a Nominated Member of Parliament in Singapore between February 2012 to August 2014. She was the founder and past president of the Financial Women’s Association in Singapore, and a board member of Aetos Security Management, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings. She also sits on the investment committee of MOH Holdings Pte Ltd. In addition, Su Shan is co-chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore Private Banking Advisory Group.

Married with two children, Su Shan is actively involved in fund-raising for various Singaporean charities and sits on the board of Singapore’s KK Hospital Health Endowment Fund, which provides financial support to needy patients. She was a past board member of the National Museum and a member of the International Women’s Foundation and the Young Presidents Organisation. On the education front, she is an advisor to Hwa Chong Institution, SJI International School and Lincoln College, Oxford University.

Su Shan graduated with a Master of Arts from Oxford University in the United Kingdom, where she studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics. In February 2006, she was selected by Citi Private Bank to participate in the Senior Leadership Program at Harvard Business School. In May 2012, she was awarded the Distinguished Financial Industry Competent Professional (FICP) title, which is the highest certification mark for a financial practitioner in Singapore, by the Institute of Banking and Finance. In June 2013, Su Shan was named “Outstanding Private Banker of the Year” by Private Banker International. The first time an Asian has won this global award since its inception 20 years ago. In October 2014, Su Shan became the first Singaporean to be recognised as the world’s “Best Leader in Private Banking” by PWM and The Banker, a leading wealth publication by the Financial Times Group.

Arthur Lang

11am // Panel 1: The impact of Hwa Chong on our personal and professional success

Arthur Lang is an alumni of The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College. He is the Group Chief Financial Officer of CapitaLand Limited. In his current role, he has direct oversight of the functions of treasury, financial reporting and controls, risk management, strategic projects, tax, investor relations and looks after the administrative matters of the internal audit department of CapitaLand. He also recently took over the running of the Fund Management department which oversees the Group’s real estate private equity funds business.

Prior to joining CapitaLand, he was at Morgan Stanley having been the co-head of the Southeast Asia investment banking division and the Chief Operating Officer for the Asia Pacific investment banking division.

Mr Lang is also a board member of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore, Tiger Airways Holdings Limited and the Advisory Board of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. He has also been appointed as a member of CNBC’s Global CFO Council. Mr Lang received the Best Investor Relations by a CFO award by IR Magazine in 2012 and 2013. He was also placed second (sell-side) for Asia’s Best CFOs (Property) in the Institutional Investor 2013 All-Asia Executive Team rankings.

Mr Lang holds a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School and a BA in Economics (magna cum laude) from Harvard University.

Desmond Ong

Mr Ong is an alumnus of the Chinese High School and the CEO of Galmon Pte Ltd. He is Chairman of both the Board of Governors of Hwa Chong Institution and the Hwa Chong Alumni Association. He also sits on the Board of Directors of Hwa Chong Institution.

Kho Choon Keng

Mr Kho is an alumnus of Hwa Chong Junior College and a patron of the Hwa Chong Junior College Alumni. He graduated with First Class Honours in BSc (Engineering) from King’s College University of London. He was also awarded the prestigious Singapore’s President Scholarship and served in the Singapore Civil Service till joining Lian Huat Group in 1985.

After joining Lian Huat Group in 1985, Mr Kho was responsible in upgrading and modernising the Group’s management system and expansion plan while preserving the qualities of the traditional Chinese ethics and culture to lead the group to be one with international perspectives and practices and yet nimble with long-term vision.

Mr Kho also holds strong belief in corporate social responsibility and commits the Group and himself to various charity and community work in Singapore and Australia:

Joel Teo

Panel Moderator

Joel Teo is an alumnus of The Chinese High School (964I) and Hwa Chong Junior College (97S73). He is the Chairman of the Homecoming 2015 Committee and the head of the membership committee of the Hwa Chong Alumni Association. He is a Partner in the Corporate Department of Lee & Lee Advocates and Solicitors, specialising in equity capital markets, corporate and M&A transactions, investment funds and private equity.

Joel graduated with a LLB (Hons) degree from the National University of Singapore in 2005 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2006. He also holds two masters degrees: LLM (Merit) (specialisation in Corporate/Commercial Law) from the University of London (Queen Mary) in 2009, and MBA (specialisation in Finance) from the National University of Singapore in 2013, for which he won the Inchcape Berhard Book Prize for Corporate Strategy.

Ho Ren Hua

2.15pm // My journey at Banyan Tree & doing business in China

Mr Ho is currently Vice President/Executive Director as well as Country Head, China for Banyan Tree Holdings Ltd, responsible for investment strategy and corporate planning in the Greater China region. His focus is on growing and developing the company’s portfolio through new management contracts, green-field acquisitions as well as strategic joint ventures. For the last three years Mr Ho has played active role in establishing and growing Banyan Tree’s regional headquarters in Shanghai and was part of the founding leadership team in the raising of the China Hospitality Fund.

Prior to joining Banyan Tree in 2010, Mr Ho worked with the international management consultancy company Bain & Company Inc. in their New York, Hong Kong and China offices, harnessing his experience in private equity due diligence, portfolio strategy as well as performance improvement. He serves on the Board of Directors of Laguna Hotels and Resorts as well as Thai Wah Food Products, both listed companies on the Thai Stock Exchange. He is a member of the Young Presidents Organization and recently spoke and participated at the World Economic Forum 2014 in Tianjin.

Mr Ho has a BSC in Economics (honors) from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a dual concentration in Finance and Strategic Management,and also has graduated from the AMP Program of CEIBS, China's leading business school. He is fluent in Mandarin, speaks intermediate Spanish and races triathlons in his free time.

Dr James Fu

2.35pm // Entrepreneurship & driverless cars

James Fu is a Research Scientist at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). He currently leads the Autonomous Vehicles Group under the Future Urban Mobility (FM) IRG. He received his Ph.D and B.Eng degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2005 and 2013 respectively. His main research interests include multi-agent task allocation, fleet management, and swarm behaviour.

Steffan Fung Wung Yue

2.35pm // Being the best you can be - Sports, Business & Volunteerism

Mr Steffan Fung is currently a Commando Officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. He has been with the Special Forces Fraternity for 16 years, operating in various countries around the world. He is also an avid sportsman, ranging from being a member of the Singapore Dragonboat National Team, to a multiple marathon finisher and a Certified Crossfit® Coach. He is also a Grassroots Leader in the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, where he will see through the inaugural Heartland Fitness Challenge in 2015.

In his sharing session, Steffan will be talking about how his passions of Sports, Volunteerism and Business actually come together, as he strives to be the Best You Can Be.

Paul Tan

2.15pm // How I got my first class without attending much of law school

Paul Tan holds first class degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of Oxford. He is called to the Singapore and English bars and enjoys a broad-based commercial and investor-State arbitration practice. He acts in disputes concerning a range of industries (telecommunications, oil and gas, electricity, mining, shipping, banking and defence technology) arising under both common and civil law systems, international treaties, and under the major institutional rules. He also has an active court practice, which includes arbitration-related court proceedings.

His experience includes long-term placements with Essex Court Chambers (London) and Lalive (Geneva). He is praised for his “wide knowledge” in commercial and investor-state arbitration and his “powerful intellect combined with extraordinary analytical discipline.” He sits on the Public International Law Committee of the Law Society, pro-tem committee of the International Law Association (Singapore), co-chairs the Australasian chapter of YIAG, lectures internationally and is co-authoring the third edition of Mustill & Boyd’s treatise on commercial arbitration.

Jack Wang

2.15pm // Value Investing in the Digital Age

Jack Wang is a qualified Certified Public Accountant (CPA Singapore) and Chartered Accountant (CA) by training. He is currently the Chairman of the Young Accountants Group of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a current board member of Global Corporate Disclosure Board for CFA, USA.

He started his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where he obtained extensive professional experience in areas of financial audits and advisory engagements for various listed companies and MNCs.

He was a former Citibanker for the Greater China Region (China, Taiwan & HK) with Citibank N.A. where he managed and advised successful entrepreneurs on their investment strategies and family business succession planning. Assets under his management and advice exceeded USD500 million.

Philip Teo

2.55pm // How to improve your investment returns using technical analysis

Philip is the founder of a startup, Traderwave, offering online technical analysis tools to traders worldwide. He was the Chief Technical Analyst (Equities) for OCBC Bank, housed under OCBC Investment Research, where he served clients across OCBC Securities, OCBC Wealth Management and Bank of Singapore. He has more than 5 years of experience in formulating technical analysis trading strategies on more than 300 stocks listed in the United States, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore and a few other Asian markets.

Following his graduation from Nanyang Technological University with a degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, he worked in the engineering field for about three years before making a career switch into the finance and investment industry.

Besides providing clients with trading ideas via his reports, Philip also regularly conducts seminars to educate them on the various technical analysis techniques used in trading the stock market. He was previously featured on a ChannelNewsAsia TV show, where he shared with viewers how to trade the stock market using technical analysis. His technical analysis reports have also been frequently quoted by various business news providers, including Bloomberg, Dow Jones and The Edge.

Mou Li

"Why do stocks always go up after I sell them and down after I buy?" Mou Lih will try to explain this question through the psychology of stock investment. Mou Lih has more than 20 years of experience in investment research. He was a strategist at Daiwa Institute of Research (S) Pte Ltd and head of research at Westcomb Securities Ptd Ltd. Currently, he is a director of Voyage Research Pte Ltd and regularly gives investment commentary on MediaCorp radio and television programmes.

Eugene Seah

Eugene Seah is the Co-Founder and Principal Trainer of Trainium Academy, a training institution dedicated to enhancing creative thinking and communication skills for kids and adults. He has over 12 years of communication experience in Singapore and Hong Kong, and enjoys playing speech and thinking games with his 3 kids (aged 10, 6 and 4). He graduated from NTU in 2001 with a 2nd Upper Honours degree in Communication Studies, and has since won several awards recognising his creativity and communication expertise.
